Tips For Making The Most Out Of Limited Self Storage

by Dawn Simmons

Self-storage is a great way to free up space at home, but you need to put some thought into how you pack a storage unit. You pay each month based on the square footage of the unit you're using, so you'll want to do all you can to pack the place as well as possible. Here are some tips to make the most out of your limited space in a storage unit.

Create A Thin Walkway In The Center

As much as you want to pack the unit from floor to ceiling, you still want to leave enough room to get things out of the unit as necessary. You'll want to create a thin walkway down the middle of the unit so that you can reach all of the areas around it. You can later fit this space with something thin that is easy to move. For example, mattresses and box springs that are placed vertically are lightweight and simple to move out of the walkway area.

Pack Mattresses In Mattress Bags

Speaking of mattresses, it is a good idea to put those in specially designed mattress bags. This will help prevent the mattress from getting dirty by resting on the floor of a storage unit or dragging it around. These bags are very cheap to purchase and can be found at a local moving supplies store.

Disassemble Furniture When Possible

Some large furniture items can be made smaller with a little bit of disassembly. For example, most tables will have removable legs. You can then place a table vertically instead of horizontally, and store the legs of the table off to the side. Recliner couches can actually be disassembled in sections, since they are held together by bars that run across the bottom of the couch. Get creative with how you store these pieces so that they are taking up less square footage.

Pack Boxes Accordingly For Stacking

The key to packing boxes is to eliminate any empty space near the top of the box. This will help you put more weight on top of the box and not have the half-empty box collapse inward. Use towels, blankets, and other materials to fill the space so you can easily stack your boxes without causing any damage.
