How To Prepare DJ Equipment For Storage

by Dawn Simmons

DJ equipment can take up a whole lot of space within your home, especially if you have a particularly comprehensive setup or multiple pieces of specialty equipment. If you want to free up some of that space, you may want to consider renting out a self-storage unit. However, it's important to keep in mind that despite its large size, DJ equipment is also fairly fragile, which means that you need to make sure that you are properly preparing your equipment before you put it into a storage unit to ensure that it does not become damaged.

Cleaning Your Equipment

Before you move any of your DJ equipment into self storage, it's a good idea to do a general cleaning of each item to remove dirt, dust, and anything else which may cause performance issues if allowed to sit for a long period of time. You should check the owner's manual for proper cleaning techniques that won't cause damage to your sensitive equipment, but as a general rule of thumb a disinfectant like isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free rag will work on most surfaces without causing damage or undue wear.

Cover the Speakers

For any speakers that you may be moving into storage, it's a good idea to cover them with a plastic sheet after cleaning them. This will ensure that dust and other contaminants are not able to enter the speakers and cause internal damage. It can also protect your speakers from water damage due to leaks or heavy moisture. Avoid using fabric sheets or other soft materials, as they can build up static which can cause damage to the electrical components within your speakers and other nearby pieces of equipment.

Climate Control

You should look for a storage unit that comes with climate control capabilities, as this allows you to regulate both the temperature and humidity within the unit. You'll want to maintain a fairly constant mid-level of humidity, around the 45% range, in order to protect your equipment. This is because high humidity levels can cause moisture to form on the equipment, which can soak your electrical circuits and render them useless. However, on the other end of the spectrum, a storage unit that is too dry increases the chances of static electricity forming, which can cause those same fragile electrical circuits to be fried in a sudden shock. The added protection that climate control offers is well worth it in the long run.
