Planning To Keep Clothing In Storage Temporarily? Keep Your Wardrobe Protected

by Dawn Simmons

Whether you are in between residences or just need to store some seasonal items away, having access to a public storage facility is always an advantage. However, storing your clothing can be a little unnerving because cloth articles are so prone to damage. While the basic storage unit will provide the necessary shelter from wind and rain, there are a few basic rules you should follow to ensure your clothing is safe while it is tucked away. Check out these simple tips to follow before you put your clothing in storage for a temporary stay to ensure you pull them back out looking just as good.

Make sure all clothing articles are completely dry.

You may feel like laundering the clothing you plan to store before placing it in storage will ensure it comes back out clean and ready to wear, which is perfectly fine and even a good idea. However, you have to make sure that the clothing has no dampness in it whatsoever before placing it in storage. If you pull items straight from the clothes dryer and pack it away in a plastic container or bag, there can be some moist heat still hanging around that could cause mildew. Make sure your clothing is dry and completely cool before you place it in a container or bag for storage.

Make sure you use air-tight containers or bags for storing your clothing items.

You do not want high humidity seeping into your clothing and causing damage, so make sure that whatever you store the items in is airtight. Most people go with basic plastic totes or containers or even garbage bags to store clothing. Some even leave their clothing in dresser drawers before placing a dresser in a storage unit. None of these ideas are the greatest because these storage methods do not protect your clothing from humidity and moisture in the air. If you use storage containers, make sure they are the type with lock-in-place lids which are designed to keep the container air-tight.

Make sure you consider some form of pest protection.

Most storage units are fairly protected against pests, but there is still an off chance that moths or some other pest could get inside to your clothing. To ward off pests, it is a good idea to place moth balls inside of the storage containers just in case something does get inside the container inadvertently. If you don't like the odor of moth balls, you can use cedar wood pieces for the same effect.
