Three Elements Of Security Within A Storage Unit

by Dawn Simmons

Part of the appeal of a storage unit is that you can set up your items and not have to worry about them for the time being. However, getting to this stage will require a bit of research from you to make sure that you choose the right storage facility. A bit of effort in organizing your storage unit with safety in mind will go a long way. Here are three elements of storage unit security to think about.

Theft Control

The first is theft control, and this will be taken care of primarily by your storage facility. Be sure that you research their security options. It's not just enough to see security cameras pointed at your unit. Make sure that you verify that the security cameras are taking footage at all times and that someone is reviewing it to make sure there are no security breaches.

Another portion of theft control comes from the locking systems. It's best to find a storage facility that has electronic locks, because these are harder to crack if you don't have the right passcode. With too many failed attempts at entry, the security team will be alerted that someone is trying to break into one of the units. Of course, some storage facilities still have mechanical locks (such as knob locks), and these can be made safer with your help. See if the manager will let you bring your own padlock to provide additional security for your unit and ask to make sure that the locks were rekeyed after the previous tenant moved out.

Fire Control

Another aspect of safety in storage units is fire control. If one unit catches fire, you want to make sure that everyone else's unit won't go up in flames as well. Some units have firewalls between each unit so that someone else's fire won't destroy your items. Check for working smoke detectors and fire alarms in your unit too. Be sure to do your part by not storing any flammable items within your unit.

Pest Control

Pests are another pain that can be spread from one unit to the other. You'll need to find a storage facility with a great manager who you can trust to adequately deal with pests such as insects or rodents. They may already have some kind of spraying process in place as a regular deterrent to pests. Ask if your unit has had any pest control problems before and how they were dealt with.

Look for a storage facility near you to keep your belongings safe.
