If you have a bass boat and do not have a garage to store it in, you need to find a way to store it for the winter. Before putting it in storage, you need to prepare it first. This is especially true because you will be storing it during the cold winter months. Below is some information about storing your boat in a storage facility, and how you can do this so the boat will be in pristine condition come spring.
Store Boat in Storage Facility
Self storage facilities are accommodated to store boats and other large vehicles, such as RVs and automobiles. You will have the choice between indoor or outdoor boat storage. With indoor storage, it is much like a traditional storage facility but larger. There will be enough room for you to back your boat into the storage unit on its trailer.
If you choose outside storage, you will park your boat while on its trailer in a lot that is secure and has been designated for only storing boats. If you do need the boat, all you have to do is drive up and pull it out, and you will likely have 24-hour access to the lot.
No matter if you choose indoor or outdoor storage, the storage facility will be completely secure so you can rest easy knowing your boat is safe.
Remove Electronics
If there are any kind of electronics on the boat, such as a GPS unit, fish finder, etc., you need to remove them and store them somewhere in your home. These electronics could easily be damaged if they are subjected to cold weather.
Fill the Tank
Make sure the gas tank is full before you put the boat in storage. If you do not, condensation will build up inside the tank. You also need to add fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank. Check the owner's manual to see how much fuel stabilizer you should use. The stabilizer is important as it prevents the fuel from decomposition and prevents varnish from building up inside the fuel system.
Cover the Boat
Purchase a boat cover to cover the boat even if you are storing it inside to prevent dust from building up on it. Purchase a boat cover that is waterproof to keep the boat dry, which also prevents mold and mildew from growing on the boat.
Start the Motor
Start the boat motor and let it run for approximately 20 minutes. This ensures that the fuel stabilizer you added to the fuel tank is distributed throughout the fuel system properly, such as in the fuel lines, carburetor, and filter.
Call a boat mechanic to learn of other things you need to do to put your boat in winter storage or contact a facility like Sentry Mini-Storage Inc.
