5 Tips For Protecting Your Belongings In Storage

by Dawn Simmons

When you place your belongings in storage, you want the peace of mind of knowing that they are safe from theft or damage. Being diligent can help ensure that the stuff you put in storage is in the same condition when you take it out as the day you put it in. Use the following tips to help protect your belongings when they are in a storage unit like those at National Self Storage - Denver:

Select a Storage Facility with Good Security

When deciding which storage facility to rent a unit at, take some time to learn as much as possible about how they keep the grounds secure. Ideally, you should look for a facility that is gated and requires an access code to get in. The grounds should be well lit at night to deter thieves, and a monitored security system and night guard will add extra protection.

Beware Natural Hazards

If you live in an area that receives a lot of rain, be careful when storing your belongings. You may want to place everything on wood pallets so nothing is sitting directly on the ground in the event that the unit becomes flooded after a heavy rain. Indoor climate-controlled storage units may be worth the extra cost if you are storing anything that can be damaged if there is high humidity or extremely hot temperatures in the summer.

Insure Your Belongings

When you rent a storage unit, it is very important to make sure the belongings inside are insured. Call your homeowners insurance company-- some policies provide coverage for personal belongings that are being temporarily stored in a storage unit. If your homeowners insurance does not provide coverage, purchase a separate insurance plan prior to placing your stuff in storage.

Keep an Inventory of What is In Storage

It is in your best interest to keep a detailed inventory of what items you have in your storage unit, preferably with photos included. When it is time to remove your items from storage, having an inventory will allow you to quickly assess if everything is present. If you happen to need to file an insurance claim for any belongings that are stolen or damaged, having photos can be very helpful.

Visit the Storage Facility Regularly

Don't put your belongings in storage and just forget about them. You should visit the facility on a regular basis and open up your unit to ensure that there are not any problems. If rainwater has flooded your unit or if pests have infested it, no one will know unless you are monitoring your belongings.
